Midwest Legacy Beef: Feeding Guide
Feeding Your Dog a Raw Diet for a Lifetime

0-4 Weeks
Getting Started
Puppies should nurse from their mother or receive a quality milk replacement.

4-8 Weeks
Transition to Raw
This is the time to introduce finely ground raw beef. Choose between our Legacy Raw Beef, Legacy Cat Blend or Legacy BLT to start your puppies raw diet. The key here is no big bones. The Legacy Cat Blend has finely ground bones which is safe for puppies this age.
- Goats Milk or Lambs Replacement milk with Rolled Oats can be added to aid in the digestion and help take the weight off the nursing mother.

With 20 years experience raising and breeding Main Coon cats, Olga hand crafted this raw blend specifically for our feline friends. BLT (Beef, Liver & Tripe)
Shop NowTake your pet's meal to new heights with our cherished Legacy BLT blend. We start with our premium Raw Beef product as the foundation and then infuse it with an expertly crafted blend of liver, unwashed tripe, spleen, kidney and heart to create a nutritionally rich, well-rounded feast your pet will adore.

8-12 Weeks
Establishing a Foundation
At this age your dog can be fully on the Raw Beef Diet keeping them as close to their ancestral diet as nature intended. Our favorite for this age is the Legacy BLT blend, which does not include bones, but includes a mix of organs. Steamed rolled oats can be sprinkled on top of the beef with Goats milk or Lambs Milk Replacer to aid digestion and provide additional nutrients. The puppies will gain weight, add muscle and increase stature in the skeletal structure.
- Provide small, frequent meals (3-4 times a day).

12-24 Weeks
Expanding the Diet
For a larger breed of dog, this is the time where bones can be added into their diet. Our Legacy BLT + Bone or our Legacy Beef 80.10.10 blend will provide the necessary calcium the dog's skeletal structure needs to grow with the perfect mix of organ meats.
For a smaller breed of dog our Legacy Cat Blend has finely ground bone paste which is perfect for this age or smaller breed.
If you plan on incorporating fruits, vegetables, sweet potatoes etc., now is the time to find out what they like. If you are set on feeding outside the raw diet, figure out what they like so you can stick to it.
- Stick to just Midwest Legacy Beef products if preferred.
- Use a mix of raw beef, organ meats, and finely ground bones.
- Possible add-ons are raw eggs, vegetables your dog enjoys, or fruits for added variety and nutrition.
- Provide small, frequent meals (3-4 times a day).

4-6 Months
Adjusting to Growth
The 4-6 month age is when you can build muscle mass and skeletal build with added nutrition beyond just beef. To increase both you can include more organ meats as toppings on their meal or better yet as treats while training! It’s vital to know exactly what you are feeding them so we have created very specific, single ingredient, options like our Freeze Dried Beef Liver and Freeze Dried Beef Heart so it's very clear exactly what's in it with nothing added. Stay away from store-bought stuff unless you absolutely have to!
- Reduce meal frequency to 2-3 times per day.

Explore Our Freeze Dry Products
Freeze drying maintains the nutritional content, flavor, and natural enzymes of the raw meat, in a shelf-stable easy to use product that is perfect for feeding your pet on the go! The comparative amount of our freeze-dried product to raw is the raw amount divided by 4.

6-12 Months
Developing a Complete Diet
6-12 months is an amazing time where your puppy is developing their skills and playfulness; learning when they want to jump and play while building their intelligence. Diet plays a big part and now is the time to set their routine at feeding time. Now is the time to find the fine line between keeping them fed but not overfeeding; we want our dogs to be hungry but not starving. They need to know when the food is set down, it’s time to eat! If your dog is walking around the bowl after 5-10 minutes of being served, pull the food away and place it into a freezer bag in the fridge for the next meal to eliminate waste.
- Transition to 2 meals per day.
- Feed Midwest Legacy Beef products with organ meats or tripe to support gut health and overall development. Products like our Legacy BLT + Bone, Legacy Beef 80.10.10 with organ and bone blend would mimic an ancestral diet.
- Incorporate a variety of proteins and supplements if needed.

1-6 Years
Maintaining Peak Health
At this stage it’s very important to set your dog's diet to maintain health and well being. Set the diet and stick to it unless you see consistent changes in your dog's stool, energy levels or behavior. If you do choose to change proteins we have a Legacy Raw 24 Pound Variety Pack.

4" Femur Bones with Marrow
Cow femur bones are an amazing raw treat for your dog. These 4" femur bones contain a large amount of bone marrow, which is a dense source of nutrients for your pup. Bone marrow provides a small amount of the B vitamins pantothenic acid, thiamine, and biotin, which are important for energy production for your dog. Marrow is also rich in collagen, which helps support a healthy coat.

7+ Years
Adapting for Aging Needs
From 7 to 12 years your dog skeleton is fully developed so they do not need as much calcium (Bones) so this can be reduced but not eliminated. Incorporating blends like our Legacy BLT without bone or Legacy Raw Beef is a great option.
- Adjust portions based on activity levels.
- Include more easily digestible proteins and joint-supporting foods.

Feeding Tips and Best Practices
- Curious about the benefits of a raw diet? Learn more about how it compares to kibble in our detailed guide.
- Monitor Energy Levels: A well-fed dog should be energetic and playful. If energy drops or your dog seems lethargic, adjustments to their diet may be needed.
- Watch Stool Consistency: Your dog’s stool should be firm, similar to a Tootsie Roll or a railroad spike. Loose stools may indicate too much fat, while hard, crumbly stools could mean too much bone content.
- Portion Control: Feed approximately 2-3% of your dog’s body weight daily as a general starting point, adjust according.
- The comparative amount of our freeze-dried product to raw is the raw amount divided by 4.
- Variety Matters: Rotate protein sources for a well-rounded diet. Try our Variety Pack if you’re looking to switch things up.
- Hydration is Key: Provide plenty of fresh water daily.
