Can Cats Eat Raw Food? What to Know Before You Start
Share
Cats get left out of a lot of raw feeding conversations built around dogs. That's a gap, because cats aren't small dogs nutritionally, and getting a cat-appropriate raw diet right matters even more.
Why cats need a different formula than dogs
Cats are obligate carnivores. Unlike dogs, they can't synthesize enough taurine on their own and depend on getting it directly from their diet. A taurine shortfall is a well-documented risk in cats specifically, which is why any raw or homemade diet for a cat needs a reliable, naturally occurring taurine source built into the formula. Our two cat-friendly blends are built around exactly that.
Legacy Cat Blend, Fine Grind
Legacy Cat Blend is our only blend ground to a smooth, paste-like consistency instead of our usual chunkier grind, because cats and other small mouths do better with a finer texture.
Composition: 72% raw beef, 7% finely ground beef bone, 5% beef liver, 5% beef lung, 3% tripe, 3% heart, 2.5% spleen, 2.5% kidney
The lung inclusion is deliberate. It's a natural taurine source, so the blend supports a cat's taurine needs through whole food.
This blend has a real origin story. It was developed with Olga Winn, owner of EuroCoons Maine Coon Cattery in Kansas City and a Maine Coon breeder with 20 years of hands-on experience. She hand-crafted the formula specifically for cats, which is a big part of why it's ground the way it is.
Customer reviews on this blend average 5 out of 5 across 64 verified buyers:

Legacy Herring + Beef
Our second cat-appropriate blend, Legacy Herring + Beef, takes a different route to the same goal. Fresh, wild-caught, bone-in herring from the Great Lakes is naturally rich in taurine and omega-3 fatty acids, combined with our beef organ mix for a well-rounded nutrient profile.
Composition: 79% fresh wild-caught bone-in herring, 7% beef muscle, 6% beef liver, 6% beef lung, 2% beef heart, spleen, and kidney
The fish bones are naturally soft, and this is one of the few blends in our lineup suitable for both cats and dogs, which makes it a useful option for multi-pet households on the same feeding schedule.
Reviews here run 5 out of 5 across 21 verified buyers:

Common questions
Can cats eat the same raw blends as dogs?
Not all of them. Cats need a reliable taurine source, which not every dog blend is formulated around. Legacy Cat Blend and Legacy Herring + Beef are both built with that in mind and are safe for dogs too.
Why does Legacy Cat Blend have a finer grind?
Cats, along with puppies and small dog breeds, do better with bone ground to a smooth paste rather than a chunkier texture. It's the only blend in our lineup ground this way.
Is taurine really that important for cats?
Yes. It's one of the clearest nutritional differences between feeding a cat and feeding a dog, since cats can't produce enough of it on their own.
